Cyprus Population 2023

The Republic of Cyprus is a small island nation located in the Eastern Mediterranean. As of November 7, 2022, its population stands at 1,227,948, according to the latest data from the United Nations. This figure represents a slight increase from the estimated population of 1,207,359 in mid-2020.

In terms of the world population, Cyprus makes up just 0.02%. The country ranks 158th in terms of population size among all countries and dependencies. Despite its small size, Cyprus has a relatively high population density of 131 people per square kilometer or 338 people per square mile. The island nation has a total land area of 9,240 square kilometers or 3,568 square miles.

Approximately 66.8% of the population of Cyprus resides in urban areas, with over 800,000 people living in cities and towns in 2020. The median age of the population is 37.3 years, indicating a relatively youthful population.

In recent years, Cyprus has experienced significant economic growth and has become a popular destination for both tourists and foreign workers. Despite this growth, the island nation faces ongoing political and economic challenges, including the division of the island into a Greek Cypriot-controlled south and a Turkish Cypriot-controlled north. Efforts to reunify the island have been ongoing for decades, but as of 2021, a resolution remains elusive.
