Population of Southern Europe 2023

Population of Southern Europe 2023: Facts and Figures

Southern Europe is one of the most populous regions in the European continent, encompassing some of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. According to the latest estimates from the United Nations, the current population of Southern Europe is 151,668,733 as of Monday, November 7, 2022.

Population and Density

With a total land area of 1,294,920 Km2 (499,971 sq. miles), the population density in Southern Europe is estimated to be 118 per Km2 (304 people per mi2). This population density is relatively high compared to other regions in Europe, but it is still lower than some of the more densely populated areas in the world.

Urbanization

Southern Europe is highly urbanized, with 71.8% of the population living in urban areas as of 2019. This means that 109,342,163 people in the region reside in areas classified as urban according to the criteria used by each country.

Median Age

The median age in Southern Europe is 45.5 years, which indicates that the population is relatively old. This parameter provides an indication of the age distribution in the region and helps us understand the health and economic implications of an aging population.

Ranking in Europe

Southern Europe is the third most populous subregion in Europe, with a population that is equivalent to 1.95% of the total world population. It ranks number 3 in Europe among subregions ranked by population. This means that Southern Europe is home to a significant portion of Europe’s population, and its demographic trends have an impact on the continent’s overall population dynamics.

Understanding the Demographics of Southern Europe: Key Terms Explained

Year

This refers to the time frame starting from July 1st of the year in question.

Population

The total number of individuals in the sub-region, including both sexes and all age groups, estimated by the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division as of July 1st of the year indicated. These estimates are based on the World Population Prospects: The 2019 Revision report, which uses the U.N. medium-fertility variant for forecasted years.

Yearly (Annual)% Change

The percentage change in the total population from July 1st of the previous year to June 30th of the current year (for example, from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, in the case of 2019). For other years, the yearly % change is calculated as the average annual percentage change over the preceding five-year period, assuming homogeneous change and calculated through reverse compounding.

Yearly (Annual) Change

The absolute increase or decrease in the total population from July 1st of the previous year to June 30th of the current year (for example, from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, in the case of 2019). For other years, the yearly change is calculated as the average annual numerical change over the preceding five-year period.

Migrants (net)

This refers to the average annual number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants over the preceding five-year period (running from July 1st to June 30th of the initial and final years), or subsequent five-year period (for 2016 data). A negative value indicates that there are more emigrants than immigrants.

Median Age

The age divides the population into two numerically equal groups, with half of the population being older than the median age and the other half is younger. This parameter provides an indication of the age distribution of the population.

Fertility Rate

The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is expressed as the number of children per woman. It is calculated as the average number of children an average woman will have during her reproductive period (between 15 to 49 years old), based on the current fertility rates of every age group in the countries within Southern Europe, and assuming she is not subject to mortality.

Density (P/Km²)

Population density is the number of individuals per square kilometer (Km²).

Urban Pop %

The percentage of the total population living in urban areas.

Urban Population

The population living in areas classified as urban according to the criteria used by each country.

Southern Europe’s Share of World Pop

The total population of Southern Europe as a percentage of the world’s total population, as of July 1st of the year indicated.

World Population

The total world population as of July 1st of the year indicated.

Rank within Europe

The position held by Southern Europe in the list of all regions within Europe ranked by population, from highest to lowest, as of July 1st of the year indicated.
