Population of Western Europe 2023: Facts and Figures

As of Monday, November 7, 2022, the current population of Western Europe stands at 197,613,016, according to the latest estimates by the United Nations. In this article, we will explore some interesting facts and figures about Western Europe’s population, including its ranking among other subregions in Europe and its population density.

Western Europe Population Size and Ranking

At 197,613,016, the population of Western Europe accounts for 2.52% of the total world population. It is the second-largest subregion in Europe, behind Eastern Europe. Among all subregions ranked by population, Western Europe holds the second position in Europe, following Eastern Europe.

Western Europe Population Density

The population density in Western Europe is 181 per Km2 (468 people per mi2). This density is higher than the average population density of Europe, which stands at 70 per Km2 (182 people per mi2). Some of the most densely populated countries in Western Europe include the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

Western Europe Land Area

The total land area of Western Europe is 1,084,793 Km2 (418,841 sq. miles). This land area is spread across several countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Western Europe Urbanization

Western Europe is highly urbanized, with 79.8% of its population living in urban areas as of 2019. That translates to 156,557,723 people living in urban areas. This trend of urbanization is expected to continue, with projections indicating that 84% of Western Europe’s population will live in urban areas by 2050.

Western Europe Median Age

The median age in Western Europe is 43.9 years. The subregion has a higher median age than other regions in Europe, such as Eastern Europe and Northern Europe. This can be attributed to factors such as a declining birth rate and longer life expectancy.

Understanding the Demographics of Western Europe: Key Terms Explained

Year

Year refers to the time frame starting from July 1st of the year indicated in the report.

Population

Population refers to the total number of people of all sexes and ages living in the sub-region as of July 1st of the year indicated. The United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, estimates this number using the World Population Prospects: The 2019 Revision. For predicted years, the medium-fertility variant of the U.N. is used.

Yearly (Annual) % Change

Yearly % Change denotes the percentage change in the total population of Western Europe over the last year, i.e., from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, for 2019. For all other years, it is the annual percentage change of the latest year equivalent to the homogeneous change in the preceding five-year period. It is calculated through reverse compounding.

Yearly (Annual) Change

Yearly Change represents the absolute change in the total population, indicating an increase or decrease in the number of people over the last year, i.e., from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, for 2019. For all other years, it is the average numerical change of the preceding five-year period.

Migrants (net)

Migrants (net) is the average number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants over the preceding five-year period, starting from July 1 to June 30 of the initial and final years. For 2016 data, it is the subsequent five-year period. A negative value indicates that emigrants exceed immigrants.

Median Age

Median Age is the age that divides the population into two numerically equal groups, where half the population is older than the median age, and half are younger. It is an essential indicator of age distribution.

Fertility Rate

The fertility rate expressed as children per woman is the Total Fertility Rate (TFR). It is calculated as the average number of children born to a woman during her reproductive period of 15 to 49 years. This is based on the current fertility rates of every age group in countries within Western Europe, assuming the woman is not subject to mortality.

Density (P/Km²)

Density (P/Km²), also known as Population Density, represents the population per square Kilometer (Km²).

Urban Pop %

Urban Pop % denotes the urban population as a percentage of the total population.

Urban Population

Urban Population refers to the people living in areas classified as urban based on the criteria used by each country.

Africa’s Share of World Pop

Western Europe’s Share of World Pop is the total population of Western Europe as a percentage of the total World Population as of July 1 of the year indicated.

World Population

World Population is the total number of people living worldwide as of July 1 of the year indicated.

Rank within Europe

Rank within Europe is the position held by Western Europe in the list of all regions within Europe ranked by population, starting from the highest population to the lowest population, as of July 1 of the year indicated.
