Understanding the Demographics of Western Europe: Key Terms Explained
Year
Year refers to the time frame starting from July 1st of the year indicated in the report.
Population
Population refers to the total number of people of all sexes and ages living in the sub-region as of July 1st of the year indicated. The United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, estimates this number using the World Population Prospects: The 2019 Revision. For predicted years, the medium-fertility variant of the U.N. is used.
Yearly (Annual) % Change
Yearly % Change denotes the percentage change in the total population of Western Europe over the last year, i.e., from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, for 2019. For all other years, it is the annual percentage change of the latest year equivalent to the homogeneous change in the preceding five-year period. It is calculated through reverse compounding.
Yearly (Annual) Change
Yearly Change represents the absolute change in the total population, indicating an increase or decrease in the number of people over the last year, i.e., from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, for 2019. For all other years, it is the average numerical change of the preceding five-year period.
Migrants (net)
Migrants (net) is the average number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants over the preceding five-year period, starting from July 1 to June 30 of the initial and final years. For 2016 data, it is the subsequent five-year period. A negative value indicates that emigrants exceed immigrants.
Median Age
Median Age is the age that divides the population into two numerically equal groups, where half the population is older than the median age, and half are younger. It is an essential indicator of age distribution.
Fertility Rate
The fertility rate expressed as children per woman is the Total Fertility Rate (TFR). It is calculated as the average number of children born to a woman during her reproductive period of 15 to 49 years. This is based on the current fertility rates of every age group in countries within Western Europe, assuming the woman is not subject to mortality.
Density (P/Km²)
Density (P/Km²), also known as Population Density, represents the population per square Kilometer (Km²).
Urban Pop %
Urban Pop % denotes the urban population as a percentage of the total population.
Urban Population
Urban Population refers to the people living in areas classified as urban based on the criteria used by each country.
Africa’s Share of World Pop
Western Europe’s Share of World Pop is the total population of Western Europe as a percentage of the total World Population as of July 1 of the year indicated.
World Population
World Population is the total number of people living worldwide as of July 1 of the year indicated.
Rank within Europe
